Title: Associate Men's Soccer Coach
Organization / Company: Sport Wales
E-Mail or Phone Number: [email protected]
Personal Information:
General Responsibilities: Manage the operations of Sport Wales. Help increase the number the institution's Men's Soccer Team
Likes: I enjoy everything about the job, being in control of a soccer program is very challenging and enjoyable. As it is a junior college it enable me to have a big part of these players lives, as I have a big role to play in whether they go on to college or not.
Dislikes: The most difficult part of my job is definitely budgeting. With the amount of travel we do budgeting is definitely one of the most important aspect, especially seeing as junior colleges do not have all the money in the world. I dislike having to motivate my players to do schoolwork although it is part of my job. They are here because they didn't have the grades so i sometimes feel like i have to babysit them, as well as coach them.
Related Experience:
During my time at university I coached a local football team’s you squad (Corby Town F.C). Upon completion of my Sports Science degree I reached out to a friend of mine that had been out in the states for a couple of year. He informed me of an assistant coaching position opening at Lander University, I applied and went through the necessary processes, and fortunately got the position. I came out in 2007 and was the assistant coach for 4 years.I also worked simultaneously with semi-professional club as assistant coach for the Erie Admirals of the National Premier Soccer League since 2009, winning the Atlantic Division and Keystone Conference twice (09,11), beaten narrowly in double OT in ’09 in the national final by Sonoma County (Calif.). Great Lakes Division Regular Season Champions (12,13), National Semifinalist in (13). I continue to work closely with the Admirals and help in developing the elite college talent in Northern America each summer. After my spell at Lander University returned to the United Kingdom and began working for Sports USA (where I am now). It is a slightly different position as I am not only coaching but teaching individuals how to coach.
Salary Range: $25,000 Euros ($31,000), plus various additional coaching opportunities (extra $5,000)
Tips for Students Aspiring Towards a Similar Position:
To start off do you coaching badges through local soccer clubs. Whether you are in the U.S.A or another country, try and volunteer with any clubs or colleges you can. The experience you will get is invaluable. If you are caching a young side, you should try progress through the age groups as quickly as possible, as to be a college coach you can't be dwelling in the younger age groups. Try shadowing a coach at a good program, no matter what the division, as volunteers are usually accepted. Be open to learning from anyone, learning what not to do can also be a huge help in the future. Make sure to also increase your network at all opportunities and be prepared to move!
